Happy Australia Day!

Celebrating our black cockatoos

Our black cockatoos deserve to celebrate Australia Day!

After all, black cockatoos are endemic to Australia and therefore found nowhere else in the world. They are very special birds! Southwestern Australia is home to three black-cockatoo species – Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo, Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, and the southwestern subspecies, the Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo.
All three of these iconic Western Australian birds are currently listed as threatened under both state and federal legislation. The main reason for the loss of habitat is predominately land clearing for agriculture. Loss of food availability is a major contributor to the decline of the species.

There are many ways you can help:
– Planting cockatoo food (marry, jarrah, banksia, bottlebrush)
– Protect and conserve woodlands
– Protect nesting areas
– Report illegal shooting
– Report injured or sick birds
– Donate to Kaarakin
– Spread the word!
